The beach is located 76 km west of Chania and on the southwesternmost part of Crete. The island and the beach are actually part of the same peninsula, which is separated by water in one spot. That gives you the impression that Elafonissi is an island. Elafonissi is an area of beauty, nature and historical interest. The moment you set your foot on the beach you will admire its beauty. The waters are crystal clear, warm and shallow, making the beach ideal also for children. The sand is mostly white and in many parts it has a pinkish color, due to the millions of crushed shells. On the spot that separates the peninsula from the island, the water isn’t deeper than 1m, making it easy to walk on the island. On the east side, the beach is very organized, with plenty of facilities such as sunbeds, umbrellas, lifeguards, showers, etc.

The whole area of Elafonissi is protected by the program Natura 2000. There are plenty of sand dunes with sea daffodils and juniper trees, plants that are endangered. The famous sea turtle Karetta-Karetta also lays its eggs there. These are only a few of the species that are protected on the area of Elafonissi.

The history of Elafonissi starts from the ancient times when a temple dedicated to the Greek god Apollo Mousagetis (lord of the Muses) was constructed on the island. At that time the island’s name was known as Mousagores. The temple today is not preserved. The name Elafonissi comes from a long period that the island was used as a shelter by pirates. This period was maybe during the Arab occupation. Elafonissi means in Greek “Treasure Island”, deriving from the Greek words “lafyro” (treasure) and “nisi” (island). Due to the island’s connections with piracy, there are rumors about a hidden pirate treasure. Perhaps by exploring the island, you will be able to find it if you’re lucky enough.

It is admirable to believe that an area like Elafonissi has its own unique beauty, nature, and history. After visiting this magical place, you will be left with beautiful memories of these aspects of the beach.
